Dr. Meng Syn answered

Crown Lengthening: Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure in which a greater amount of tooth structure is exposed by lowering the bone and tissue level for the purpose of subsequently restoring the tooth with a crown. A surgical flap is made around the tooth and the bone and tissue are lowered with a laser, scalpel or handpiece under anesthetic.

Details: There are crown lengthenings that involve only the trimming of gums and there are more complex oprocedures involving both gums and the underlying bone. These procedures can be done using scalpels or electrosurgery or a laser. The end result is having more of the tooth visible above the gum line discuss the specifics with your dentist.
