i had gallbladder removal 4 weeks ago, and 3-4 days after surgery my alk phos and alt increased significantly. as of july 1st, these values were still elevated but trending downward. should i have them rechecked or assume theyll return to normal?

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, abstain from alcohol and get these redone in about 6 months.

left grade 3 vericocele surgery 2 years ago. max vein size after surgery was 1.8mm. had a recent usg done, max vein size is 2.1 mm(standing). i started doing workout few moths back, but i wear supporter. is it the reason? how to stop size increase?

Accepted Answer

: The commonest cause of 'recurrence  of a varicocele is inadequate 'ligation' /excision surgery. But ultrasound measurements could be off for they are operator driven. What was the need for post-op ultra sounds? If you have symptoms pl see your surgeon or get another opinion.

will taking arnica a week before rhinoplasty  and taking bromelain after surgery increase bleeding? i am in great health and take no  meds or otc's

Arnica/Bromelein: I recommend in my private pre op patients BUT you really need to ask your chosen surgeon his/her recommendations....

Seek information: You need to discuss this with your physician and surgeon.  This may have just been an unfortunate occurrence which is always a risk with needle or incisional biopsy , albeit slight.  Alternatively , there could be an underlying platelet or blood disorder which contributed to your bleeding.  Your doctors can help you sort this out.  Communicate your concerns to them.

swelling of frenulum under tongue after surgery for it healed . swelling increases and reddens after i brush my teeth . worried about what it may be.

See dentist: There will be some redness after this kind of surgery.  The area will be delicate and bruises easily if you hit it with a toothbrush.  Be gentle with your toothbrush.  See the dentist that did the surgery if you have questions or concerns about healing.

i had done total thyroidectomy. after surgery  after two weeks i checked t4 and t3 both are normal. and doctor asked to check after three months. and when i checked after after 3 and 1/2 month t4 and t3 were normal but tsh got increased. before i did not

HYPOTHYROIDISM: HYPOTHYROIDISM can cause a myriad of symptoms. In women it can cause dysfunctional uterine bleeding resulting in a secondary anemia. It also may be associated with anemIa of chronic disease. Get your levels checked regularly and follow up with your doctor. The goal is to lower TSH PREFERABLY &lt;1. I prefer armour thyroid &gt;synthroid. Follow up with your doctor for medication adjustment.

radical prostatectomy at age 50, 25 yrs ago. minor incontinence immediately after surgery. gradually increased. now in diapers full time. any recent improvements?

: Sorry to hear about your symptoms. Yes, there are new medications that may help, and if you’ve never had pelvic floor physical therapy, I highly recommend you give it a try! Physical therapists with special training in the muscles of the pelvis can really help and maybe get you out of diapers. Ask your primary physician for a referral to a urologist. Good luck to you!

i have elevated creatinine levels since my urostomy surgery, what should be done to correct this?

Evaluation: Elevated creatinine is a marker of decreased renal function, which can have many causes including urinary obstruction and infection which are likely in your case.  Please see a nephrologist to have a complete evaluation.

Depends: This depends entirely on his overall health status, how different this is from his normal creatinine, and how comfortable his surgeon and anesthesiologist feel about doing the operation.

what is normal for bun and creatinine post kidney removal?  my grandfather's bun: 28 and creatinine: 2.05.  he is 3 weeks post surgery.

No exact answer. But: This  value ofcreatinine of 2 after removal of one kidney is not normal. It should be closer to 1.0 or so. However, if grandfather is in his seventies and about 160-170 pounds, his kidney function is near 50% or so. In his age group, his kidney function should be near 70% or so. He has probably an aging of his kidneys beyond his actual age. Need to ask his doc about reason. Hi blood pressure?
