It has been associated with iron deficiency anemia and shown to respond to iron supplementation.   Some believe   that some forms of pica may be the result of nutritional deficiency. Chewing ice may lessen pain in glossitis related to iron deficiency anemia. No association with head injury.

Gastritis: Gastritis refers to inflammation of stomach lining. Calcium, H2 blockers &amp; proton pump inhibitors, all available over-the-counter w/o prescription are often used to treat this condition along w/others, eg heartburn, indigestion, acid reflux, etc. I don't see any harm in eating ice cream (dairy products contain calcium, after all) but don't overdo it! Too many calories &amp; not enough nutrition.

Pica is a more unusual craving of usually inedible items,  such as dirt that occurs more often in children.   It has similar origins, i.e. iron deficiency. Have your blood checked.
