why is it that after i take inhaler i cough?

Irritant: An asthma inhaler contains the active ingredient and the propellant which can be cold in temperature and irritate the throat leading to cough.  The dry powder inhalers can lead to cough because of irritation as well.  The airway in patients with asthma is already "hyper-reactive" =twitchy and inhaling almost anything can trigger a cough.  Rarely, asthma inhalers can actually trigger bronchospasm.

Chronic Cough: Are you on any blood pressure pills ? If so Stop lisinopril, try Losaratan
Do you have seasonal allergies? Over the counter medication
History of Acid reflux? Try Ranitidine, Prevacid or Prilosec over the counter.
With shortness of breath and lower extremity swelling; cardiology, chest X-ray, echocardiogram.
History of smoking?  Chest x-ray

Technique: The technique is critical in using inhalers. I would suggest that you do not use this specific inhaler until you see your PCP. Get an appointment this week and bring the inhaler with you.

Cough: While cough is a common symptom of asthma, there are other reasons for cough.  Assuming the inhaler technique is good (challenging for infants), other reasons for cough should be evaluated.  Also, if there is difficulty administering inhaler, other options such as home nebulizers are available.  Infants with recurrent respiratory symptoms should be evaluated by lung specialists.

i've had severe chest pain on the left side for 2 days now. its worse when i bend over or cough.  my inhaler doesn' t help?
