Gastroenterologist: See a gastroenterologist, may recommend an endoscopy or an Xray test called a barium swallow (or both). There are a number of causes for difficulty swallowing and this should be investigated, especially at your age.

Chronic cough &amp; GERD: Yes, absolutely GERD can cause those symptoms. In essence, you describe a chronic cough. GERD, whether symptomatic or silent often causes irritation of the airway resulting in mucous, cough and throat clearing. The other most common causes are asthma (which can be worsened by GERD) and post nasal drip. A trial of an acid blocker should help. It may take a few weeks  before noticeable improvement.

GERD: Avoid spicy foods, add a probiotic to your diet and try a course of antacids and proton pump inhibitors (ppi). If the symptoms continue please consult your physician. Both can occur at the same time.

Long time.....: Gerd can lead to bronchospasm which, in turn, leads to cough. The cough will likely continue until the getd is adequately treated. If the cough continues after that, then there may be other factors contributing to the cough including bronchospasm from another etiology, post-nasal drip, etc. So, if you are still coughing, see your doctor again. If you smoke, you need to quit!

Possible, unlikely: A cough can be caused by many things, gerd being one of them.  Not sure how you know your had gastritis, but that is not linked to gerd or a cough.  Environmental allergies and asthma would typically be at the tip of the list. Of course if you smoke, that would influence it as well.

Antiacid: take an antiacid from the "ppi" family (proton pump inhibitor), such as omeprazole, pantoprazole, etc.

Meds and lifestyle: Chronic cough from reflux happens because a little stomch acid gets into your lungs at night. This sets up a cycle of inflammation. Try putting the head of your bed up on blocks so you're not totally flat. Avoid drinking liquids for an hour before bed. Avoid chocolate, alcohol, peppermint, spicy foods and tobacco. They relax the lower sphincter of your esophagus. You may need a ppi (med); ask doc.
