Cough on quitting?: Your question doesn't say when you quit smoking or how long you've had this cough, so 1st I would set up an appointment with your primary or pulmonologist to have this evaluated. Good for you on quitting smoking! Keep it up. One possibility is that ur cough is simply the result of quitting. This allows cilia in ur resp tract to become healthier and more mobile &amp; thus clear more mucus --&gt; cough.

COVID-19 presents with fever, dry cough and shortness of breath. Since you work with immunodeficient patients, staying at home for the next two weeks and scheduling a virtual consultation is advised.  You may need inhalers to control your smokers cough.

See a cardiologist: There are many possible causes for a chest pains like lung problems, muscle pain and gastrointestinal problems. Regardless, chest pain with shoulders pains, is always a red flag and visit to a cardiologist is warranted.

Not sure how much you smoked, or how long, but quitting does help any changes in your upper airway to recover fully. Some smokers have a cough when they stop because the 'cilia' in the windpipe come back to life! if you have no problems after quitting, great! stay off for good :-).

Probably normal: Although it's not common, some people seem to cough more than usual soon after stopping smoking. Tobacco smoking slows the normal movement of microscopic hairs that line your lungs. When you stop smoking, these hairs/cilia become active again. When active, they help clear mucus from your lungs. It should improve on own. Drink lots of water. See doc if persists &gt;2 months.
