Symptoms: should dictate how you proceed from this point if you have significant arthritis any arthroscopic procedures would be of very limited benifit. If you have mechanical symptoms then arthroscopic intervention may be helpful.  your options depend on the overall condition of your knee you should discuss this with your orthopedic surgeon

The : The torn meniscus came first. An MRI is an excellent tool but is not perfect. If the baker's cyst was present so did the meniscal injury. A meniscal tear causes the baker's cyst. The collagen fibers of the meniscus are arranged in a parallel arrangement and a tear creates a communication with the capsule and serves as a one way valve to create the cyst.

knee mri showed torn meniscus. i have a lot of pain and i don't react well to cortisone. i'm taking too much advil and tylenol.  i need another medicine alternative until i can get to surgery.  i have mri supporting doc?

Consider: Consider topical voltaren gel, lidoderm patches, capsicum cream. Some herbals could be helpful.

Other findings: At age 58, one may have had more than meniscus damage.  There is a great chance that you had significant articular cartilage damage that could be inhibiting your recovery.  Recommend anti-inflammatory and pool therapy.  If no better, need to go back and see the operating surgeon.

Pain relief only: Meniscal tears generally do not heal.  Inflammation is a normal step in healing, and steroids block inflammation.  Any relief that one feels after a steroid injection is from inflammation reduction.  Generally, acute meniscal tears require surgery, unless they are very small.

cortisone: Often times a cortisone injection will temporarily improve pain and inflammation from any cause...Including a meniscus tear.  That does not mean that cortisone cures the tear however.

Meniscus tear: If it is primarily arthritis, synovitis, and just a degenerative fraying of theme miscues, the cortisone may help the surrounding inflammation. If a truly large tear with mechanical symptoms, get a scope.

Hard to say: A meniscal tear will not heal, but a cortisone shot may help decrease the swelling
sometime it takes a week or so to have the
swelling go down
realistically the onlly way to cure the problem is to do an arthroscopic meniscectomy.

No: Cortisone is an anti-inflammatory medication so it will decrease or mask the effects of inflammation such as pain or swelling, but it will not fix a tear.  Inflammation is one of the first signs of an injury.  Pain and swelling is a fire alarm signalling your naturally made agents of healing to come to the injured area to initiate healing.  Steroids can turn off that alarm and slow healing.

Need more info: Your pain depends on quality and severity of arthritis.  Meniscus tears are often related to arthritis.  A rough joint surface will tear anything in between.  Treating meniscal tears in the face of severe arthritis is not a prudent treatment although frequently done.  I would continue to use steroid unless start having more mechanical symptoms and correlate extent of arthritis as may need replacmt.
