Cortical cataract: The "cortex" of the natural lens is a layer just inside the lens capsule. Deeper is the nucleus, or main body of the lens. A cortical cataract is a clouding of the cortical layer, usually across the front of the lens. This can cause glare, but is sometimes not bothersome. It can extend across the back of the lens, which affects the vision more. If the vision is impaired, cataract surgery can help.

Cataract types: A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye. Most people will develop a diffuse clouding of the lens with age. This is referred to as a "nuclear sclerotic" cataract, or a senile cataract. It develops slowly after age 50-60, and may never have to be removed. A cortical cataract is a clouding usually on the front of the lens and may cause signficant glare. It may develop more quickly.

Visual : Visual recovery is usually rapid after cataract surgery.  My patients are often able to return to work one or two days after their surgery, depending on the occupation.  Normally only one eye is operated on at time, which will leave your vision unchanged in the eye that is not having surgery .  Your eye surgeon will be glad to advise you about returning to work.  The improvement in vision from cataract surgery should make it all seem worthwhile.

Yes: Although the majority of patients who have cataracts have them in both eyes, there are plenty of people who have a unilateral (in one eye only) cataract.  The reason is not always apparent but trauma may play a role.

New Technology lens: There 2 types of new implants which are placed in the eye at the time of cataract surgery.  One is called a multifocal which corrects both distance and reading vision thus lessening dependence on glasses.  These implants work in appropriately selected patients.  The second type is the toric lens implant which corrects astigmatism.. It gives sharper vision without glasses and works very well.

Surgery - no medical: To date, there are no proven medical treatment to slow or reverse cataracts despite claims of some nutriceuticals. Surgical removal of a cataract (your eyes natural lens) is curative, as it does not come back.  Good nutrition, control of chronic conditions (ie diabetes) and uv protection are all likely protective for cataract development.
