No: I have been told that it is mildly uncomfortable and one can feel a pressure sensation.  However, anesthesia and pain medications are administered before and during the procedure.

how is a colonoscope test done ?

Accepted Answer

Sedation: Colonoscopy is performed by placing a long, flexible tube along the entire colon and rectum via the anus.  While people dread this, it is painless when done under sedation.  The worst part is the day before when the "prep" is taken to purge the system.  Although unpleasant, this will find polyps before they turn into cancers, thus saving one from major surgery.  If you're 50, "get 'er done".

are all polyps found when you get a colonoscope?

Accepted Answer

The vast majority : The vast majority , esp the larger ones will be found , however it has been shown in studies that up to 40% of patients who undergo colonoscopy will have polyps that were missed , either because they were small or behind a fold.That is why we recommend that patients in whom polyps are found should undergo repeat colonoscopy 3-5 years later.

are all polylps found necessarily cancerous when you get a colonoscope?

Accepted Answer

No: Many polyps that present during this test are not cancerous, but if left in the colon, can develop into cancer.  Tubular and villous adenomas can develop into cancer.  Patients with familial polyposis syndromes can have many polyps throughout their colon, which makes malignancy almost certain.  Sometimes the entire colon is removed to prevent it.

if the colonoscope detects abnormal growth in my rectum, does that mean i have colon-rectal cancer?

Accepted Answer

Uncertain: Any abnormal growth seen at the time of colonoscopy requires that a biopsy be done to clarify exactly what that "abnormal growth" actually is.  The biopsy should give sufficient information to determine what the next step should be, ie, repeat colonoscopy, surgery, further testing such as endorectal ultrasound, etc.

is it possible to have a colonoscopy without sedation for patients with psychological trauma related to sedatives? what happens during/prior to the insertion of the colonoscope when most patients would be sedated/asleep?

Accepted Answer

: Colonoscopies are very infrequently performed without sedation at a patient's request and I'm told they are painless even during polyp removals. Most patients do change their minds and agree to conscious sedation though when spoken to by the anesthesiologist just before the procedure begins.

how often is a colonoscopy aborted because of a tortuous sigmoid colon fixed in position, and why? (both adult & pediatric colonoscope could not be advanced past the sigmoid colon despite being put in the supine position w/ multiple diverticula seen?

Accepted Answer

Infrequent: This is not rare, and the procedure can be accomplished via use of virtual "colonoscopy" employing CAT scanning.  However, pre-procedure preparation is the same.  A gastroenterologist can fully explain the various approaches, answer your questions, and treat necessary complications.

can entering  things in anal ( finger, pens,dildo,carrot,colonoscope,..) consider a risk factor for anal or rectal cancer(not with hpv and stds)

Accepted Answer

No: The link to HPV is clear-cut, but this won't up risk. Be careful with pens or anything else that can perforate your mucosa or that could become lodged there. If this is something you really want to do, with yourself or with others, fine. There's no understanding personal turn-ons. If this is compulsive / unwanted behavior, a short course of cognitive-behavioral therapy might free you from it.

i have been having chronic ruq pain along with pelvic, chest, and back pain since 2021. the doctors gave me a hida scan with ef at 25%. ultrasound shows nothing wrong with gallbladder and colonoscope was negative. would gallbladder surgery be best?

: Often, biliary dyskinesia can cause symptoms similar to those of gallstones. With typical-sounding symptoms and a gallbladder ejection fraction of &lt;40%, Some patients will benefit from cholecystectomy. See a gastroenterologist and a surgeon experienced in biliary and gallbladder problems. Good luck.

doctor i had a colonoscopes about 8 months ago, had 5 polys, but all were ok. just 3 weeks ago, i had a endoscopy stomach scope. the doctor, tested for, h pylori, the  stomach was ok. but doctor wants to run stool sample, [worried] why a stool sample?

Accepted Answer

: A stool sample can provide information about a possible infection or active inflammation in your bowels, among others. Without context as to what your symptoms are, your treating gastroenterologist remains your best resource going forward.
