mother has a lip cold sore, but takes medication for it. after she touched it, she gave me a cup. i washed my hands after touching it once but continued to use it. i went to the restroom and accidentally touched myself when wiping. will i get herpes?

: No doubt Herpes is contagious but the way you are describing , most  likely you should not get the infection so quickly.
If symptoms start ,you must see your Physician.

Time: Cold sores are viral infections.  Medications have limited utility, and sounds like you'd like to avoid them anyway.

Good skin care, lip balm, moisturizer, don't pick at it, and some good make-up will be your friend.

Oral herpes?: First confirm the diagnosis. Not all apparent cold sores are due to herpes. A sore inside the mouth more likely is a canker sore, not a cold sore. Effective treatment is available for oral herpes, but not before confirming the diagnosis and it needs a prescription. Take your daughter to the pediatrician right away -- the sooner the better for accurate diagnosis and for effective treatment.

can you get a cold sore if a child who has the virus spits at you and it lands on your tongue? my son spit his medication out back at me while administering and spit landed on my tongue. i washed off with soap but still worried?

: The short answer is yes, you can get contaminated with (Herpes Simplex) cold sore virus by being contaminated with an infected person's saliva. You took the best immediate precautions, and possibly over did it.  Your child probably got the virus from you in the first place anyway.

HSV no, warts maybe: No OTC medications will have any significant benefit against an oral herpes outbreak (cold sore). For warts, there are OTC treatments, such as "Compound W" in the US; I have no idea about what is availalbe in Kenya. But you shouldn't self treat anal warts without professional care. Your diagnosis may be wrong; and in the anal area, significant irritation and ulceration can result.

: Your oral herpes is completely healed. Any wound, whether from infection or injury, may have discoloration afterward. It doesn't mean anything, and acyclovir will not help. It is not contagious.

Your Dr.: prescribe Valtrex (valacyclovir) or another antiviral which can actually help regarding transmission to others. Melissa Officinalis or lemon balm (cream). Brief supplementation w lysine 1,000mg orally 3x a day at the onset, can hasten healing. Your dermatologist can provide laser treatments.

3 things: The  herpetic lesion lasts7-14  days no matter what.
If it is unsightly you can get special little band aids to cover.
You can use an rx  antiviral creme to lessen time and severity.
Lastly. Otc  cremes can be used which are mostly palliative.

Oral valacyclovir: No cream or ointment will help. Ask your doctor about valacyclovir. A single dose by mouth will speed healing. Good luck!

Accepted Answer

Oral herpes: It should be completely healed -- i.e. no open sores and any scabs should have fallen away on their own. Usually this means at least a week and often up to 2 weeks after onset of an outbreak. The same is true for kissing anyone -- not just oral sex. Your partner could consider a blood test for HSV. Up to half of all people are positive for HSV1. If so, he is immune and can't catch it from you.
