Not antivirals: If this is herpes simplex topical antivirals will not shorten the duration of the lesion or ameliorate the discomfort. All they do is reduce the amount of virus being shed so that you are less infective to others if the lesion touches them. It may, however, induce resistance of the virus to that medication. Use protective topical applications available otc. Check with your friendly pharmacist.
