Swimming: If the lats were used to reconstruct your breasts, swimming suchs as front crawl may exacerbate pain symtpoms.  breast stroke, reverse stroke and doggy paddling should all be well tolerated.
In addition, I would not recommend excessive pullup or lat- pull downs

Neuro Possibilities: Your symptoms could be due to thoracic nerve root pathology.  Thoracic disk herniations can cause similar symptoms as can entities such as herpes zoster affecting the nerve (especially if associated with a rash).  Consider thoracic spine MRI as a next step if no rash is or was present in the symptomatic area.

Pain: Your husband needs to see his doctor to determine the cause of the pain.  If that has been done he can then do a search on the net for the the work of John Sarno, MD, who has a mind-body approach to pain and many books available.  Peace and good health.

Need mamogram/ultra: This can be a number of things.  breast pain is not a common presenting symptom of breast cancer, but can occur.  breast pain during menses is common due to enlargement of the breast ducts during the estrogen surge.  I would have a mammogram or ultrasound if you have a painful lump, although this is usually due to fibrocystic disease

Many options: Many women are candidates for immediate reconstruction at the time of mastectomy.  Usually most of the skin, and often times the nipple can be preserved to give a better cosmetic result.  Reconstruction can be performed with either an implant or by using a woman's own fatty tissue from the abdomen or from the back.

Breast reconstructio: Breast reconstruction after mastectomy  can be done with multiple of methods depending on the amount of breast removed. It depends on the other breast, what the surgeon is expecting from the original surgery, is there any node excision and so on.
Reconstruction can be done with own tissue(tram) or an implant.
Talk to you good plastic surgeon.

Variable: Recovery varies quite a bit depending on the method of reconstruction.  In general, women who have tissue expanders in preparation for implants will be hospitalized for 1-2 days and may return to work in 2-3 weeks.  In contrast, when a tissue transfer ("flap") procedure is performed, these numbers tend to double.
