Hard to say: Can't tell why the tooth chipped, the condition of the tooth, restorations it may have, and how it occludes with your other teeth. If you question your current dentist's diagnosis, why don't you get a second opinion from someone that can examine you? This way you can be sure to treat that tooth and feel comfortable about it.

Cuspid : Cuspid (canine)  play a big role in occlusion (bite)due to cuspid rise. Depending on which surface of the tooth is chipped, it can affect the relationship of neighboring or opposing teeth whichever will compensate for the load during function.

See your dentist if the chip is by the incising surface of the tooth. It needs either repair or adjustment.

See dentist: Sometimes trauma can be worse than it appears. How old is he. If he's a child and it's his baby tooth he'll lose the tooth around 11 years of age. If he's a you c adult is recommend seeing a dentist so it can be determined if there has been damage to the tooth (ie cracks, nerve damage etc) which can then be properly addressed.

If it is just a small canine, then a crown could build it up to its correct size.
If it is a baby tooth, then you have to decide if it can be saved and crowned or will be lost.
