Not recommended: Research has shown that cough and cold medicines offer little benefit to young children and can have serious side effects.  Children's Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin (ibuprofen) can help with pain and discomfort, while a vaporizer or time in the bathroom with the hot shower running can loosen congestion and help with cough.  Saline nasal spray can help with a runny nose.

what is the best nebuliser medication to use for asthmatic child (11) should they have an incident during the flu season? my daughter is on chronic sereflo pump and asthavent. i have duolin nebs in the house currently which we used last flu season.

Treat to control: If your daughter has no cough, wheezing or shortness of breath at any time during the day or night, continue the Sereflo and Asthavent as prescribed. Duolin may be added for lack of control, and for acute symptoms, a course of Prednisolone can be prescribed by your physician. The use of a peak flow meter, allergy testing, asthma control questionnaire and repeat pulmonary function testing indicated

Medication: You are on Meloxicam it is an NSAId and the Almka seltzer has Aspirin.  These have similar side effects on stomach and platelets.  This could be concerning ,but for a dose or two unlikely problem.

For anti-inflammatory effect & mobilizing mucus- homemade chicken noodle soup.  Hydrate- lots of water/clear broth/ add honey & a small amt. Of lemon juice to chamomile tea..  Fever/ pain – acetaminophen. Rest! let your OB doctor know.

Test proven ?: The flu can be deadly to small infants but it can also be so mild nothing of importance happens. If hospitalized for basic needs an antiviral may be used if started in the first 48hrs of symptoms. Otherwise care is mainly supportive based on assuring fluid needs &amp; nutrition. Any breathing issues are worrisome &amp; deserve close monitoring.

Keep well rested: If it's Flu A or B, a doctor might prescribe Tamiflu. If it's a cold virus, there are no useful antivirals. Some people take extra vitamin C (may upset the stomach) and some take extra zinc (most lozenges have lots of sugar) but how much these things help is uncertain. Avoiding overexertion is wise. Anti-inflammatories like Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin can help decrease aches and fevers.
