Hard to say!: Eating problems in young kids can be due to physical to behavioral issues.  Making sure there is no physical problem is the first step.  Then exploring reasons for behavioral problems is crucial to fix what is causing this early.  Get a second opinion, if necessary or desired, for either reason.

Depends: A slight amount of bright red blood on the surface of a large or firm stool is likely due to a crack in the anus.Firm these need an evaluation by your doc.

For a future illness: Cord blood has stem cells that could be used to re-establish the blood forming capability of a child who lost that ability when high dose drugs were used to treat a cancer or leukemia. Future research may allow us to use stem cells to form new body parts.

Doubt it: I believe there are federal laws that prevent selling of biological materials like the cord blood.Many cord blood banks pay for the acquisition and processing of this material to make it available for anyone who needs it, at cost. If you paid to have your kids processed &amp; stored it is yours,but rules that cover body parts like kidneys would likely prohibit such sales.You might be able to donate it

Jaundice: If you have type o or negative blood, and your spouse is different, your child could be born with type a or b, or rh pos blood. If that happens, there could be an antibody reaction at birth. However, hospitals test for that, and if it's noted there's a difference, they look for jaundice and treat it if seen. Truthfully, as it's caught early, it's not that big a deal anymore.

Yes: Blood sugar meters are not specific to adults or children.

Meters which can be used for adults can also be used for kids.  Some meters require less blood so might in that sense be better (easier) on children.  However, for really young infants, remember that their blood sugars are normally lower and more likely to be in a range where home blood sugar meters are less accurate.

A range: If you are heterozogous for your a, then junior can have type a or type o.  If you are homozygous for your a, then junior can have type a only. If you are heterozygous for your rh (positive / negative), then junior can be either rh positive or rh negative.  If you are homozygous for your rh positivity, junior will be positive. It's a bit trickier but this almost always works.

Blood loss: Any blood loss is serious. It also depends on if loss happens quickly or over a long period of time - the body has different mechanisms to deal with different blood losses. However, a 10% blood loss is serious and a 20% blood loss is very dangerous. Again, it also depends on surrounding circumstances. Please discuss with child's caretakers if blood counts dropping.

is a butterfly needle good for when a child is getting blood taken?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Many phlebotomists (blood drawers)  find they have better control with this system. I'm all for them using the tool they are most successful with so they can get blood with the fewest attempts.
