How could my child use his cord blood?

For a future illness: Cord blood has stem cells that could be used to re-establish the blood forming capability of a child who lost that ability when high dose drugs were used to treat a cancer or leukemia. Future research may allow us to use stem cells to form new body parts.

Illness in self/sib: Banking cord blood is becoming widely advertised. Currently cord blood can be stored and used to treat about 100 rare illnesses in the donor or a brother or sister. We do not know all the ways cord blood will be used in the future, if at all. The cost of collection and storage vs the unknown future potential need to be evaluated by each family.
