Virus: The most common cause of both hives and cough would be viral infection.  New hives can be treated with as needed long acting next generation antihistamine (cetirizine, loratadine, fexofenadine).  Be sure to use the appropriate dose.  Another potential cause is environmental allergy (in which case antihistamine will also improve cough), but this is less likely to cause the hives.  Good luck!

Doctor can evaluate: Cough and throat symptoms can be from flu/cold viruses, strep throat, allergies, etc., except that allergies usually don't cause a fever. Doctors have rapid 5-minute tests for strep so a primary care doctor can diagnose strep and start antibiotics for "positives". Doctors also have a 15-minute test for Flu A and Flu B. Certain medications can cause cough in some people. Allergies also cause cough.

Maybe asthma: The #1 symptoms of asthma is chronic cough. You may need a test to determine whether you have asthma or not. Antihistamine should stop the cough if it is only allergies.

Not unusual: The cough suppressant effect from Delsym, (dextromethorphan) although mild, is intended to reduce your cough. If you have sputum in the lung, suppressing the cough is not a good idea.  The cough suppressant also make some people nauseous.  If your cough has been present for more than a week or getting worse, you should see your doctor.

Dr. can check throat: Throat symptoms can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the cough or throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). Cold and cough medications may not help much in young children.
