Virus: The most common cause of both hives and cough would be viral infection. New hives can be treated with as needed long acting next generation antihistamine (cetirizine, loratadine, fexofenadine). Be sure to use the appropriate dose. Another potential cause is environmental allergy (in which case antihistamine will also improve cough), but this is less likely to cause the hives. Good luck!
