how accurate is the calorie count on my elliptical machine?? if i'm working out for 30+ minutes and the calories burned says 100, can i rely on that? i understand i must burn more than i consume, but how can i calculate my burn at 5'5", 185 lbs??

Calorie calculate: Get the app Cronometer and enter what you eat and exercise you do and see. 100 calories is about 1/2 Snickers.  You need to exercise more or eat fewer calories.  Simple in concept difficult in execution.

By a formula: Typically you would punch in your gender and age at the beginning.  Depending on the type of exercise, there is estimates for the amount of calories burned per minute- for example, it may be that a certain treadmill  reports that at a 4% incline at 4.5mph for a 38 year old male may burn 7 calories per minute (as an example only)
 this is all estimated; individual results will vary.

if you plug in your numbers, you get 516 calories burned.

Calories: You must be eating fewer and or burning more calories to lose. Weight. Get the app Cronometer and enter all you eat/drink and exercise and it should become clear what the problem is.  Discuss with your team. 
Don’t forget every one is different but you and Cronometer should give a good idea of where the problem lies.

Not necessarily: The complex formula for energy expended during a routine activity is most often incorrect. It is good for a relative reading on you from time to time doing the same thing. Much depends on your weight, height, ambient temperature, speed and conditioning to begin with. Use the number for comparison on the same machine for only your body.
