why would polyps on cervix cause spotting during pregnancy if untouched by intercourse or anything else?

Polyps are "friable": Not in a pan!  they are very fragile and are able to grow by producing there own blood vessels which lack supporting structure.  As  you move the polyps move vwhich even in the absence of direct touch leads to bleeding. They are rarely cancerous and are commonly found because of bleeding even in pregnancy. It is rare for them to be dangerous but the bleeding can be irritating,  not usually heavy.

Yes & yes: You pretty much know the answers. An increase in size of course makes them more noticeable. Bleeding makes them more noticeable, otherwise, why would you look? They do tend to extrude more in pregnancy because of the above & also because the cervix softens, slightly opens, making it easier for polyps to be seen. It was probably always there, now it's bigger, badder & causing trouble, still ok.

i'm 33. history of tiny uterine polyp. had two babies. before kids i was told i have a friable cervix and during each pregnancy. noticing after sex last two months within 24 hours i spot very very lightly. concerning ?

Accepted Answer

: A friable cervix means that the blood vessels are very superficial and can be irritated easily. Spotting after sex may mean that this irritation is causing some broken blood vessels which results in spotting. Make sure you are getting annual PAP smears and cultures to rule out HPV, Chlamydia, etc., and to visualize ther cervix and its health.

a need for dilation and curettage polypectomy surgery needs to be done to remove polyp. could you explain any worries post surgery and does this procedure cause 'incompetent cervix' in case of a wanted pregnancy in the future?

Accepted Answer

D &amp; C/ Polypectomy: The D &amp; C will open the cervix temporarily to allow complete removal of the polyp. The curettage (C) or scrapping of the endometrium will not impact future conception or childbearing unless it is done far too vigorously resulting in Asherman's syndrome which results in scarring of the interior of the uterus. Post procedure recovery is very rapid and usually does not result in incompetent cervix.

Possibilities: The cause of cervical polyps is not entirely understood. They may result from infection. They can also result from long-term (chronic) inflammation, an abnormal response to an increase in estrogen levels, or congestion of blood vessels in the cervical canal. Depends: If the polyp is stable and not bleeding I would monitor it and remove it after pregnancy. Removing the polyp carries some risk of bleeding and uterine irritability which can lead to a miscarriage. However, if you are having ongoing bleeding then the benefits of removing it may justifies the risk.

is there even a small chance that a very tiny polyp on cervix is causing an infertility?

Accepted Answer

If infected, yes: An infected and necrotic cervical polyp will prevent sperm from reaching the intrauterine cavity by inducing inflammatory cells( white blood cells) that can "ingest" the sperm.  Moreover, those same cells will enter the uterus and prevent implantation in severely infected cases. Polyp removal is relatively simple and should be considered if pregnancy has been an issue.

Gee, didn't know: they occurred in 1-2% of women ?!?
They are found by accident on radiological studies of the fallopian tubes commonly. By definition if the tubes are open, they are not going to do anything.

Accepted Answer

: Cervical polyps normally develop from local cervical irritation. They are not specifically dangerous but should be removed because of a small chance they could be precancerous. They are easily removed in the office with minimal discomfort and you should be sufficiently healed in two weeks for normal activity.

diagnosed with a polyp on cervix which has been bleeding for a month solid. i have to wait 2 months to be removed. can symptoms escalate?

Accepted Answer

Beeding : Cervical polyps cause irregular bleeding but not much else. 2 months seems like a long time to wait for something as easy as a poly removal. Unless it is really big most can be removed in the office in seconds. Don't be afraid to ask for an earlier appointment.
