my 5 year old was given a prescription of 2 1/2 teaspoons of cephalexin 2 times a day for strep throat for 10 days.  sound right i feel this is too much.  is that correct dosage?

It : It depends on the strength of the oral suspension and the weight of your child.

Cephalexin oral suspension comes in 2 strengths: 125mg/5ml or 250mg/5ml

the recommended dosage for a child with strep throat is between 25-50mg/kg (2.2 lbs) twice a day for 10 days.

If he is on the 125mg /5ml then he is getting about 312.5mg/dose.  This is an appropriate dose for a child 12-24 lbs.

If he is on the 250mg/5ml then he is getting 625mg/dose.  This is an appropriate dose for a child 24lbs to 50 lbs.

Before it is given,: Some people who are penicillin allergic can have cross allergies to cephalosporins like keflex.

my 20 year old daughter has sore throat, swollen lymph nodes  and uti symptoms. throat culture showed strep b. dr gave keflex- is it necessary?

It's actually: a GOOD CHOICE for an antibiotic since it will probably "cover" both infections (both gram positive and gram negative organisms)

Doses are...: Calculated by weight, not age.  If you are concerned your child has been dosed too much, ask your doctor to double check.  S/he should be able to reassure you.

can i give my 5 yr old benadryl (diphenhydramine) with the antibiotic cephalexin? bee sting got infected

Accepted Answer

Yes: Benedryl is a bit sedating to some but it is well tolerated by most 5yo in that setting. Dosing is up to  1 tsp (5cc) per 25 lb up to every 6 hrs.  You can control the discomfort or swelling more naturally by using cold compresses. Wet a face cloth & place it in a ziploc bag & chill in the freezer. Or crush a few ice cubes into the same face cloth , ziploc it & you have easy compress for use.

can you get strep while on cephalexin and a virus?

Strep: Cephalexin will eradicate strep after several days of taking it, but will not prevent a viral throat infection. A new strep infection won't take place while a person is taking cephalexin.

i have cobble stones and i am on cephalexin for strep c. i have acid reflux and allergic rhinitis. are cobble stones dangerous?

Sign of irritation: The cobble stones are just from irritation be it from an infection, reflux, or post-nasal drips. By themselves they are not dangerous but the cause for them needs to be investigated. See your doctor.

is a persistent chest cough and swollen eyelids related to drs diagnosis of beta hemolytic strep group b? just completed 7 days of cephalexin.

Perhaps: It seems that you may have an infection and as to whether it is group b strep depends on a culture. This could also be a viral illness in which case the antibiotic will not make a big difference.  If you are not better in a few days then it may be worth getting a culture or empirically changing to a different antibiotic.  Discuss with your doctor.

will cephalexin (keflex) be effective for strep throat if i used omnicef (cefdinir) 2 weeks ago for the same thing?

Maybe: Maybe but Strep throat is a Gram positive organism. 
The other meds do kill Gram positive bacteria, many more as well as some Gram negatives. You don't need all those meds. Get a rapid Strep throat swab to see if you need any antibiotics at all.  Some urgent cares have them.  If its a virus neither med will help.  Not good to take left over meds. See a doctor for quickest treatment.
