Fever: strep throat is extremely sensitive to antibiotics, weather it is amoxicillin or cefidnir. If your child is not responding, it means that there is something else your child has on top of strep like a viral infection.

Strep: Nothing is better than penicillin for strep pharyngitis. Is that simple.  2 penicillins: injection is the best (bicillin la), or  oral pen vk is good as well.

: If you have strep pharyngitis at your age then you have carried that bacteria in your throat all the time (colonization) and when the bacteria overgrows, you have the symptoms of pharyngitis. Even if strep A is present on your boyfriend's penis, you do not get sick right away the next day because the shortest incubation time is 48 hours. Take care.

Other illness: Problem may be some other cause of illness. Would consider mononucleosis, other viral illness. Blood testing will help.

: She needs to take cefdinir for 10 days to eradicate the strep germs.  The efficacy of Cefdinir is not any higher than amoxicillin in terms of eradication of streptococci from infected pharynx.

Switch or shot: I see no reason not to switch, and wonder why they would use such a foul tasting and expensive med to start with.If the kid won't take any oral med, a LA Bicillin shot would also work.

Not likely: The reason hives occurs is not clear, but if hives were a drug reaction to cefdinir, the hives occur during or shortly after (few days) of completing the antibiotic.  Sometimes hives can be related to an infection including viral infections and strep throat.

Different family: Amoxicillin belongs in the penicillin family where as Cefdinir belongs in the cephalosporin family.  There is some cross reactivity when it comes to allergies;  they  both kill bacteria by affecting cell wall, but they are different.

Yes: Omnicef (cefdinir) is in a group of antibiotics called cephalosporin's. Amoxicillin is in the penicillin group. While there is some cross allergies to the 2, they are separate chemicals.

MGt: The allergic reaction to Amoxicillin can still be the cause of this rash, but a new drug allergy is also possible. He should be treated with an antihistamine. Is he experiencing any respiratory problems? If so, please see the ED right away. It is important to contact your PCP.
