Get fit: Eat healthfully. Try to eat at least 5 servings of vegetables &amp; 4 of fruit per day. Increase nutritional fiber. Avoid refined sugar &amp; junk carbohydrates.  Avoid alcohol, sweetened juices, soda &amp; caffeinated beverages.  Aim for 7.5 to 8 hrs of sleep / night. Hydrate w at least 64 oz of water / day. Calories burned must &gt; calories consumed.  Do both cardio &amp; weight training.

it seems that every time i complete significant   stretches of intense activity (days of cutting firewood, building houses, house painting on ladders, etc, i find that i do not lose weight. it appears that either i gain muscle tone or my appetite increases. at 6'1" and 292 pounds, male and pear-shaped , i am finding it difficult to lose weight.  i am 55. i was 265 pounds of lean, mean fightin machine in my 30's when i built my log house. comments?

Overweight : At 265 pounds someone is not lean, you may have a lot a muscle mass. Exercises can almost never out due to weight gain to excess calories. I had a 360-pound patient who did cardio for one hour 5 times a day for a year and lost no weight. I believe you need a dietician. Start by recording everything you eat . See your primary care doctor.

ALS: ALS also known as Lou Gehrig disease is a serious neurological problem. I suggest you read up on it as there are multipe sites on the Internet for lay people and see if you exhibit any if the symptoms.

Yes & balance, too: Tai chi is an excellent exercise that has been shown to increase strength, tone, flexibility & balance in its participants (typically studied in seniors) as well as to decrease falls & hip fractures.

Weight and aerobics: Aerobic or cardiovascular exercise will reduce fat, making the underlying muscle more prominent.  Weight lifting is also good but for toning it's best to use lighter weights and do more reps as opposed to heavier weights with fewer reps (which is used for adding bulk).

Many variables: usually this refers to laxity or "looseness" of muscles at rest. Very often a sign of poor physical conditioning or underlying medical illnesses. This can also be found in certain endocrine and neurological conditions: please get examined and tested.
