what specific exercise would you suggest for the vastus medialis?

There are several : Options. Step ups & step downs, wall ball squats, & the really convenient isometric contraction (also w adduction)   are you concerned w a specific injury? Patellofemoral syndrome? A pt or certified trainer can give you more specific exercises. The am academy of orthopedic surgeons site may have some patient resources as well.

Vastus: You have strained the vastus tendon. Try applying some ice and take a NSAID like Motrin or aleve (naproxen).

Healing: Everyone heals at differnet rates but that is a very long time. Suggest you go back to surgeon and be sure there is not underlying infection or pathology.

Only if MD sees: The vastus lateralis muscle is one of the large muscles that comprise the "thigh" muscle. Concern would only be in order if a skilled md finds reason to be so. Good luck!

Your doctor needs: to findout if you have any cause for your neuropathy.  This can be from many causes - usually diabetes or alcohol or other drugs are the cause. You need to go over with your doctor what possible things in your life are responsible for it. The secondary inflammation suggests you have a compromised immune system or slightly weakened one.  People usually do not get inflammation of the muscle.

i have a herniated disc 5 months ago in l4 and l5 and im on lyrica (pregabalin) 150 it affects my sciatical nerve.but recently i feel a numbness and a burning sensation in my vastus lateralis muscle.also i feel a pain in my heel when walking or standing

A : A disc bulge between the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae (the l4-5 disc) can affect the L4 nerve as it leaves the spinal canal, the L5 nerve root as it passes the disc level, or any of the nerve roots passing by the disc if the compression is severe enough.

The L5 nerve root receives sensation from the posterior of the buttock, the outside part of the thigh, the front and outside portion of the leg below the knee, and top and heel / sole of the foot.

Your symptoms sound like they are coming from the L5 nerve root.  Lyrica (pregabalin) is a medication used to "quiet" the irritable nerve roots.  Talk to your doctor about the side effects and prescribing recommendations for that medication.

Most disc herniations will resorb or "go away" on their own...If given enough time.  If you experience weakness, bowel, or bladder issues, you should contact your physician.

the muscles in my lower back have been spasming for a couple hours now without pain. what could be the cause?

Back pain: The spasm in the back can be due to lot of reasons, it is mostly seen with back sprain or other related musculoskeletal issues. You can use heating pad, over the counter topical cream such as bengay or asper cream. If symptoms persist then see your doctor.

can tight,spasming hip, butt, low back muscles on one side cause leg to hurt? had steroid shot in butt gave a little relief but still feels crampy

Accepted Answer

Spasm: Absolutely, spasm can reduce blood flow and cause pain/aching in the leg. Not sure why you had the steroid IM shot though. Consider getting your low back looked at by a chiropractor or a DO who knows how to manipulate.  Odds are you have a structural issue somewhere below L2.  Soak in a hot bath then do some gentle stretching exercises.
