Headaches PTU (propylthiouracil) : Headaches can be a side effect of any medicine but can also exist due to other reason while taking a medicine ptu (propylthiouracil) is not a common cause of headaches make sure other reasons are ruled out.

i have hyperthyroidism the methimazole and ptu (propylthiouracil) cause my wbc to be around 3.1 i feel great. what can i do?

Monitor closesly: Although it is working well to suppress thyroid hormone, the methimazole can be toxic to the bone marrow.  Your low WBC can be an early indication and needs to be followed closely.  Make sure your prescribing physician is aware of the lab result.

Talk to doc : Lowering the dose might cause your levels to go out of range and you won't feel "great" again. Talk to your doc to see if he/she is willing to monitor you closely. If the drugs ptu (propylthiouracil) or methimazole is causing adverse reactions,  you might need to think about the othet options: radioactive iodine or surgery.

PTU (propylthiouracil) and liver : Drugs like ptu (propylthiouracil) and Methimazole can cause liver toxicity but hyperthyroidism can also cause elevation int the liver enzyme test you had done. If your still early in your treatment and your thyroid hormone levels (free t4) is still high it could be that. Hope this helps.

Liver toxicity: Fulminant hepatic failure is the most serious adverse effect (black warning exist for such risk). Other side effects include rash , joint pain and rarely bone marrow suppression.

Don't understand: These drugs are used in the treatment of hypothyroidism.  I am assuming you mean are they effective in the treatment of hyperthyroidism.  That is something you need to discuss with you physician and endocrinologist.  There are many causes of hyperthyroidism and it will depend on that.

Getting better: It takes many weeks (typically 6 weeks) for Methimazole or ptu (propylthiouracil) to bring thyroid levels down to normal.  The TSH will remain low even after your thyroid level is normal, because it takes time for the pituitary gland to recover from the high levels.  At this time, just follow the thyroid level and remain on medication.
