is it common practice to prescribe compazine (prochlorperazine) for a 17 yr old for upset stomach from pollen allergies, took for a week and had extreme allergy.

Nausea: Compazine (prochlorperazine) is a well known anti-nausea medicine, but one that has a lot of side effects. I personally have never had a patient with nausea caused by pollen allergies that was so bad that they needed any anti-nausea medication, but i don't know how severe this child's symptoms were. I generally try to treat the allergies first, which i think is pretty standard practice.

Unlikely: There have been interactions reported in patients who have taken both ciprofloxaxin and prochlorperazine, but these have not been severe and almost entirely reversible. Should be ok.

Compazine (prochlorperazine) does...: Ondansetron (zofran), a powerful  anti-nausea drug, is a serotonin 5-ht3 receptor antagonist. It blocks these "receptors" linked to the crtz..The "vomiting center" located in our brains. Compared to compazine, (prochlorperazine) a piperazine phenothiazine linked to other brain receptors (d2), it causes very little sedation. Both are used to decrease nausea and vomiting after surgery.

Good point: In psychiatry, we call those medications antipsychotics, because they are usually used to treat psychotic symptoms.  We don't use the term tranquilizer, because it is misleading.
As far as your question is concerned, the side effects you mention are unintended, so they are not part of the intended use. As for anxiety, i'm not familiar with the antipsychotics causing anxiety.

Antipsychotics: Every medication has side-effects, and antipsychotics are no exception. If used cautiously ; with clear indications ; close monitoring, they are for the most part safe.

i have add severe nausea since january. ive seen 2 gastro doctors, primary and psychiatrist. no one can find the cause. only promethazine helps but it puts me to sleep. will compazine be good for during the day, also any help what it could be?

: Your body is talking to you.  Listen and take good notes. Such as what you eat and drink and see if you can find trigger that sets you off. Then share with your team. You all will figure it out. I was taught that practicing medicine was not easy.  Keep at it.

Of : Of the medications you listed, none of them are known to cause leg/ankle swelling or fluid retention.  Amitriptyline can cause some cardiac arrhythmias, however, that potentially could lead to fluid retention, but this is much more common in patients with a preexisting heart problem.

I would let your primary care physician know about this swelling.  It's probably unrelated to any medication you're taking (especially if the swelling just started and you've been on these meds for a while), but i think you have something else going on that's causing the swelling.
