Physical therapy: First line treatment is conservative - physical therapy and anti-inflammatory meds.  Sometimes a brace will help.  Steroid injections into the knee also can help.  Lastly, arthroscopic surgery is indicated if conservative treatment has failed.

over time possibly necessitating arthroscopic
surgery
ive had patients with partial tears and grade
2 meniscal damage who are found to have
tears on arthroscopic surgery.

Knee ligament : Most common knee injury after pop leading to instability, swelling, pain is an acl tear. Medial pain could be meniscus or mcl injury. Another possibility could include patellar dislocation....But usually more obvious.
