is it possible for you to have carpal tunnel in your shoulder blade and arm?

Accepted Answer

Not normal: Carpal tunnel is median nerve compression at the wrist causing numbness and tingling in the thumb, index, long, and half the ring finger. You can also develop lack of coordination and decreased strength of the thenar muscles it does not effect the shoulder blade or upper arm.

No: Carpal tunnel is a problem with a nerve in the arm. It causes numbness and tingling in the hand.  Neck and shoulder issues would not be related to carpal tunnel

While it is not a common finding: Complaint for finding there are times that carpopedal symptoms seem to radiate up towards the shoulder although classically it stops at the elbow are also times with other conditions may be made to feel worse because the hand mechanics are altered by the fact that one is compensating for carpal tunnel for example if you had some shoulder tendinitis and carpal tall you may change the way you do things part of the exam for carpal tall involves finding out if the shoulder has any mechanical pain unto itself this is something you can discuss with your treating physician.

Not likely: Carpal tunnel is when the median nerve gets pinched at the level of the wrist.  The median nerve gives sensation to the thumb, index, middle, and half of the ring finger and these are the digits that develop the pain/numbness/tingling seen with class carpal tunnel.

The median nerve can also be pinched at the level of the neck and create similar symptoms but rarely at the shoulder.

Carpal Tunnel: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is due to median nerve that passes through a narrow canal at the wrist becomes impinged due to swelling. Typically, there's discomfort downstream from your wrist (hand/fingers) and not the elbow, shoulder and neck. You may have a herniated disc at the neck area causing issues downstream i.e. back, shoulder, elbow. Consider further eval w/Healthtap or your primary care MD.

YES: Look for trigger points in the upper pectoralis minor muscle (tos).

emg indicates symptoms are from severe carpal tunnel & mild cubital syndrome not coming from neck. could either of these syndromes cause shoulder and upper back pain?

Accepted Answer

: Maybe in part as carpal tunnel syndrome can refer to shoulder but would not affect upper back.  However, brachial plexitis might explain this.  Discuss with your doctor

Probably still CTS: Carpel tunnel syndrome pain can sometimes be referred all the way up the arm.

i play a good bit of video games & lately my right arm has been hurting near the elbow with the pain radiating to my shoulder & down to my forearm with my fingers feeling tingly.... could it be carpal tunnel from playing video games?

: Carpal tunnel syndrome is possible, but so are lateral and medial epicondylitis, also known as tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow. Try to limit your video play, apply ice packs (10 min on/off) with ice in a plastic bag wrapped in a towel, consider ibuprofen if you have no reason not to take it. If pain persists, see your doctor.
