Yes: Yes you can take antibiotics with over the counter cold medicines.  But, if you only have a cold, antibiotics will do nothing to help and you could experience toxicities and side effects from antibiotic treatment.  It will also alter your bowel flora to varing degrees depending on the antibiotic type and duration.

Mucinex (guaifenesin) : Mucinex (guaifenesin) is compatible with all antibiotics.  Keep in mind that cold medications can only improve symptoms temporarily and do not actively fight respiratory infections.  Some cold medicines, like antihistamnes, may actually delay the improvement in a cold.

If your symptoms are worsening or extending to a new area you should be sure to contact your doctor to keep him/her aware of your change in status.

Not helpful: Antibiotics are primarily for bacterial infections. A cold is typically viral. However, you can get a secondary infection like sinusitis or bronchitis in which antibiotics would be helpful. This usually occurs after prolonged cold symptoms, congestion or other complications and is characterized by fever, sinus pain, green/yellow discharge and lack of resolution of symptoms.

Cold: Feed a cold, starve a fever !   Try Tylenol 500mg two three times a day. If you have Zicam in the pharmacy then one every thee hours  will relieve your symptoms. Tussi Organadin may help your cough. Otherwise it is self limiting. However if you get no relief then it may be bacterial and you need to see a doctor to get an antibiotic. Good Luck

Blood thinners & Abx: First of all, you don't want to treat a virus (the usual cold) with an antibiotic, because antibiotics don't work against viruses, only against bacteria, which cause secondary problems will sinusitis or ear infections or bronchitis. For blood thinners generally, the manufacturer recommends caution with all antibiotics, but if you need one you should take one and just monitor your blood tests more.

Not always: Antibiotics are not always necessary during root canal treatment.  I try to avoid them whenever possible as they pose an allergy risk to patients and taking them unneccesarily can lead to resistance.  If they are needed, best to let the dentist decide the one that will work best.

Take the antibiotics as the Doctor recommended, and drink plenty of fluids to help with secretions.
