unable to have normal bowel movements. laxatives no longer work. i have to strain to the point of nearly passing out to pass liquid stool or gas. no bowel blockage shown on x-ray or ct scan. what could the issue possibly be?

The issue is more...: More teamwork and evaluation with the primary care and gastrointestinal doctors are needed. A person with constipation needs to be sure there is no other disease causing it. If constipation is just due to slow movement of the food and poop through the gut, then the things to try are exercise, vegetables, prune juice, laxatives, etc. Colonoscopy may be needed. Doctor may try Linzess or Amitiza.

can a partial bowel blockage cause appetite loss ?

Yes, but...: A partial obstruction of the digestive tract could result in decreased appetite, but there are many things that can cause decreased appetite, so I would not jump to that conclusion unless tests have been done that would verify that. If you have a prolonged decreased appetite, especially if it results in excessive unintended weight loss, see your doctor. Good luck.

could a bowel blockage and double hernia be corrected during the same surgery?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Simple answer is yes.  Sometimes if the bowel blockage requires resection of the intestine, hernia repair may be delayed or temporized.  You don't want to risk contamination of hernia repair with bowel surgery.  Some evidence exist that it is safe to repair hernias with mesh even when there is some contamination from bowel surgery.

Gabapentin: Gabapentin is not an opioid. Constipation is an occasional side effect. Your pharmacist can give you specific information about this medication,however. Don't discontinue it without discussing this with his physician.

is it safe to give a premie baby tea (strong or weak) for a stomach upset or bowel blockage?

Accepted Answer

No: As a general rule no infant should be given anything other than breast milk or formula unless specifically recommended by the child's pediatrician.  The baby should be examined to determine the cause of the upset and then the doctor can give appropriate treatment.

Possibly: CT of the abdomen with IV contrast may show a bowel obstruction. If it does show up, that is good. If it does not show an obstruction and one is suspected oral contrast maybe needed.

Yes:  ACR specifies: “Oral contrast should not be used if high-grade SBO is known or suspected. Oral contrast will not reach the site of obstruction, wastes time, adds expense, can induce further patient discomfort, will not add to diagnosis.
 A small bowel diameter of 2.5cm achieves the highest combination of sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of obstruction.

can scar tissue from femoral hernia cause bowel blockage or cause blood in the stool?

Short answer - NO: A femoral hernia repair is done outside the peritoneal cavity, in which the bowel lies.  Only in the most bizarre situation would blood in the stool or intestinal blockage be related to your hernia repair.  An unrepaired femoral hernia can indeed lead to bowel obstruction if the loop is entrapped in the defect.  It should not cause bloody stool. Discuss with your doctor.  Good luck.

35 year old male. i have off and on narrow stools and are long. i had ct/w contrast and no mass or bowel blockage so am not sure what is causing this. im currently suffering from high anxiety and stress so im not sure if this is the possible cause?

: It is not feasible to provide an opinion without additional history, physical examination may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor to see if you may be depressed. Depression is treatable. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, exercise may help. Start with low intensity exercise such as walking and gradually increase the intensity as tolerated. Drink more water.
