Yes: Simple answer is yes. Sometimes if the bowel blockage requires resection of the intestine, hernia repair may be delayed or temporized. You don't want to risk contamination of hernia repair with bowel surgery. Some evidence exist that it is safe to repair hernias with mesh even when there is some contamination from bowel surgery.
