i will get my wisdom teeth taken out. i have five of them. any suggestions for a speedy recovery?

Post-extraction: Listen to the dr's instructions! no smoking post-op is paramount. Typically, no rinsing for 24 hours is advised. A soft diet, avoiding very hot foods/liquids is also helpful. And rest. Lay off the treadmill for a little while.

Yes, but: do you have any worsening pain or swelling or difficulty chewing or swallowing? if non of those then relax and discuss any symptoms or concerns with your oral surgeon

Stop, call: If at the extraction site: it is hard to say if the itching is part of the healing process or a possible allergic reaction. Ii would suggest that you stop taking the antibiotics and call your dentist asap.  Discuss in more detail what you are experiencing and ask for advice. If  not, fungal infection likely that can be treated with medication as prescribed by doctor.

is it common that wisdom teeth to erupt 4 or 5 years early?

Depends: Wisdom teeth can come in any time in a wide age range, and keeping in mind that everyone develops at a different rate, this probably isn't a major worry. A panoramic x-ray at the dentist can help identify any problems that this might cause.

What's comfortable: At this point in healing, you can return to a normal diet if you are comfortable. Avoid the surgical areas for a few more days if possible.

i got my wisdom teeth yanked 5 days ago and have been icing. my cheeks are really dry to the touch. why?

From icing: The moisture from the ice is causing the skin to dry.
No big deal.  Use some lotion on it.
No need to keep cold on the area after 5 days.

No: Most people do have wisdom teeth, some people have two or three, but not all four and some people may not have any.  Some people can have extra sets of them!

Start at about 15: Wisdom teeth eruption can vary on ages, most likely around 15 years old.  Whether the wisdom teeth erupt properly is another matter.  The teeth can no erupt at all (completely impacted- in bone, bone and tissue;) partially impacted- part way through the tissue or fully erupt.  Many people are born these days without wisdom teeth.  Should have your dentist monitor as you get to this age.

could having wisdom teeth out hurt?

Sure...it Could: Usually, it does not cause much bother though.  But, if you have severely impacted wisdom teeth that are completely unerupted, it will be a bit more difficult to ext them.  Most normally, the vast majority of my patients who have wisdom teeth taken out, complain of soreness, not pain, for 2-3 days at a level of about 1-3, on a scale of 0-10 with 10 being worst pain possible.

when do wisdom teeth start to form?

Approx. 9 years old: Around age 9, wisdom teeth start to form inside the bone of the upper and lower jaws (maxilla and mandible.) .The jaw have a lot more growing to do, so they are not yet at their full density.
