Be pro-active: I don't know what follow-up was done or offered, but if you had a high-grade intraepithelial lesion in 2011, it sounds like you're more than due to get seen again. Around 30, 000 women used to die every year from cervical cancer in the usa; it's thanks to pap smears that the numbers are now near zero -- thanks to women complying with instructions.

Varies: With all the information we now have about hpv--we know  if you test negative for hpv , you can safely go 2-3 yrs before another pap  needed.  Most dysplasia (abnormal cells)-if mild or moderate, will revert back to normal--but you need to make sure of this.  Severe pre-cancerous changes are treated aggressively.  I have seen cancer in women who have been lax on pap for 5 years-normal 5 years ago!

What did the person: Who found the abnormal cells say ? Did you ask that person to explain your findings?  You can have cervical pre- cancer which is called dysplasia , there are numerous articlesonline that u can read about it but call you doctor as your doc should explain exactly what you have and what you are supposed to do for followup or treatment depending on exactly what you have, also could be chronic cer.

Colposcope: A colposcope looks at the cervix in detail including its anatomy.  It's main use is to  help the physician detect microscopic abnormalities, cancer, and dysplasia.

Yes: Once you have the virus that causes cervical cancer, the abnormal cells can recur at any time. That is why it is especially important for you to have regular Pap smears and no skip them. You have seen that finding these things early can prevent major problems. The majority of cases of cervical cancer in this country occur in women who have not had Paps. Get in this week and have your Pap. Be safe!

: Most frequently "precancerous" cells (CIN) start in the endocervical canal and spread from that pint outward. However cancerous cells can occur anywhere on the outside of the cervix. CIN III (severe dysplasia) can be treated with freezing, LEEP, or laser procedures as needed.

Yes: While cancer of the cervix is best handled by a cone resection which allows proper evaluation of depth of in-situ penetration into the basement membrane, much of the endocervical area can be removed by laser but would require close re evaluation to make sure recurrent disease doesn appear.

what is the success rate of a leep surgery for stage 3 pre-cancer cells on the cervix?

Pretty good: First, if a LEEP is considered for cervical dysplasia, it is GRADE 3 not STAGE 3. Staging is for invasive cancer, so don't confuse them because that is much scarier. If a LEEP gets around the entire abnormal area, it will essentially cure it. If there is more going up the endocervix, it may not. It may still come back and every situation is different, but if margins negative high chance of cure.

Cervical cancer: Precursor lesions to cervical cancer (LSIL, HSIL) usually appear 10 or more years before an invasive cancer, but are not always detected immediately upon appearance. If detected visually, then local excision using electrocautery, is usually effective, but f/u needed until HPV neg. Cryo occ.  poss
