Relative....: People who have allergies to shellfish or fish have a relative contraindication to taking fish oil supplements and they should proceed with caution when considering taking them.

Allergy testing: It is unusual to be able to eat crabs and seafood with such a strong history of iodine and multiple seafood allergies.  I would not recommend fish oil at this time.  If you are depressed, there are medications and counseling that can help - see your Doctor.  If you have not been evaluated for specific food allergies, seeing an Allergist for testing is advised.

what is the best form of iodine supplement? i'm a vegan, trying to cut back on salt, and i don't want to eat seaweed everyday. what is nascent iodine? is that an okay form of iodine? how much should i take?

: Since the primary sources of iodine are salt, seaweed, dairy and cod, you will need to take a multivitamin/mineral supplement.There are many whole food based vegan multivitamin supplements that can fill this need.

Shellfish allergy: You should be fine with salmon. This is a fish, but not a shellfish.  I would have some allergy medicine available however incase you do have a reaction.  But, in general this will be safe for you.

Not all is allergy: First, i need more info. What is y our allergy to iodine? If you had a problem with contrast material for x rays, that is a special case. Lactose intolerance is inability to digest mil sugar (lactose); you can still eat cheese; most people tolerate yogurt, where lactose is already broken down. If citric acid bothers you, you may have a problem with stomach acid. See an allergist first, .

Iodine allergy?: Iodine allergy is likely more fiction than fact.  Those who react to seafood or x-ray dye are not really allergic to the iodine.  Tartrazine is a yellow dye which once was considered an "allergen" but is yet another false alarm.  These two are totally unrelated.

Accepted Answer

No: Most people with "iodine allergy" had reactions to xray contrast. This is not an actual allergy (i.e., immune reaction) to iodine, but a side effect of the chemicals in the contrast dye. Even though fish and sea life contain a relatively high amount of iodine, there is no risk for cross-reaction to the contrast material. But, you can become allergic to jellyfish themselves if stung often.

Colds and flu: Breastfeeding moms can use meds with the following ingredients: Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen (fever/pain), Dextromethrophan (cough). Doxylamine succinate and diphenhydramine may cause sedation in mother and breastfeeding infant and should be used with caution if the infant has a history of apnea. Pseudoephedrine is likely safe while breastfeeding, but may decrease late-stage milk production.

Do you have allergy: symptoms to IV iodinated contrast only? Because all table salt that you buy from the grocery store contains iodine, unless it expressly says it doesn't.  If you have been consuming iodine from table salt, then you are not allergic to ingesting or coming into contact with it.  Just to be sure you should ask your primary care provider to distinguish.
