No food restrictions: There are no food restrictions at all for metronidazole (Flagyl®). Even alcohol -- which has long been considered risky (potentially causing vomiting) has been disproved; drinking in moderation is no problem.

: Yes.

can i still eat sweets such as chocolate and cakes whilst taking flagyl for d.fragilis? if so do i have to wait between doses before consuming sweets?

Not a good idea: From the point of view of the antibiotic, yes you can have sweets and cake. From the point of view that the Flagyl is treating an infection, it is best not to take sweets when you have an infection. It would be OK to take occasional sweets or chocolate. If Diabetic take none.

Any time you want: As for most antibiotics, metronidazole (Flagyl) absorption and effectiveness are not affected by food. Take it with or without food, it doesn&#x27;t matter.

i am starting flagyl can i eat egg, bread, is there anything besides alcohol that i should avoid?

: While taking Flagyl (Metronidazole) you should avoid alcohol and anything containing propylene glycol. Flagyl can cause your body to retain potassium, so also avoid eating lots of foods containing high potassium levels including bananas, oranges and leafy greens as well as salt substitutes containing potassium. Make sure you take a probiotic daily, and drink lots of water.

No problem, no worry: In fact, there is no problem with alcohol and metronidazole. That theoretical problem has been shown to not exist -- it's a persisting medical myth. Of course don't overdo it, but the occasional drink won't be a problem. There are no significant dietary restrictions for people taking metronidazole. I've never heard of a soy sauce problem.

Alcohol: Alcohol is the main concern. Food is okay - in fact helps prevent upset stomach.

taking flagyl and cipro (ciprofloxacin) for diverticulitis. should i take probiotics at same time? can i eat nuts and seeds now or after symptoms (pain) goes away?

Accepted Answer

Probiotics are safe.: Probiotics will not affect your antibiotic treatment for diverticulitis and are safe to take. I would avoid eating anything with seeds or nuts as these may get stuck in a diverticulum and cause a flare of diverticulitis. Risk of recurrence is drastically reduced by removing the diseased part of the colon.

have been on cipro and flagyl for presumed diverticulitis, advised clear fluids and soft foods/dry toast for taking antibiotics. am i okay to eat activia yogurt to try to counter the diarrhea im starting to have, or should i be avoiding dairy?

: If you're only a few days into treatment, probably it should continue. If near the end of the intended treatment period, maybe you can stop the drugs. Dairy probably won't make much difference either way. But each case is different; the place to ask is the office of the doctor or clinic treating you. Good luck.

on cipro (ciprofloxacin) and flagyl for colitis, also diagnoses of mild diverticulosis. given vague dietary guidelines... how long eating brat diet? then what to eat?

I don't think anyone: really knows for sure regarding dietary guidelines for people with colonic infections.  Common sense says "binding foods" which include bananas and grains/oats can only sustain you so far, before the lack of animal proteins and fats kicks in.  While that is in and of itself not a bad thing in relation to weight loss, you should consider increasing your diet back to normal within 2 weeks.
