Balance: The antidote for Coumadin (warfarin) is vitamin k which is in a lot of foods, but most heavily in dark green leafy vegetables. My advice to my patients typically is to eat a balanced diet. Do not work hard to avoid or eat extra of these items, just eat a balanced diet with some vegetables every day and then work with your anticoagulation clinic or your physician to titrate your dose to your diet.

Vit k : Foods that contain vit k can reduce the effect of coumadin (warfarin). Such as fresh greens etc. The list of foods and meds that can interact is extensive. Please call your doctor or pharmacist.

Accepted Answer

Most anything.: Greens ( spinich, kale, mustard, turnip greens) can blunt the effect on the coumdain on thinning your blood.  The important thing is, if you eat certain foods reguarly, you will not have wild swings on your pt. If you suddenly binge on foods such as these, that is a different story.  And the taking of antibiotics can increase your pt.

Best to avoid: Even cooked green vegetables has vit.K.

Need to monitor PT: If you change your diet you should get your blood tested more frequently to make sure that your pt is at the desired level. Discuss your proposed change in diet with your doctor to arrange for more frequent testing.

Yes. : I'm personally not a fan of strawberries, but by all means, enjoy those strawberries. Just remember to stick to a regular diet that doesn't have any wild swings in what you eat and check your inr periodically. Discuss with your pcp, who should ultimately keep on top of your Coumadin (warfarin) therapy.

Just about: Anything. Coumadin (warfarin) should not impact weight gain. It is true that intake of green leafy vegetables needs to be consistent to stabilize Coumadin (warfarin) regulation.

Yes but...: Strawberries contain relatively low amounts of vitamin k when compared to green leaves. However just like any other food, excessive amounts are not recommended.

Yes: The black eyed peas are not high in vitamin k that counteracts coumadin (warfarin).  It is green peas which you should avoid they are high in vitamin k.  In any case let your managing dr. Know.

Moderate Vit K: Most nuts have a moderate amount of vitamin k in them, so with each handful you're antagonizing the Coumadin (warfarin) effect, that is, lowering your inr.  Sunflower seeds have a very low amount of vitamin k, but still, the effect is simply dose-dependent: the more you eat them, the greater the impact.  Another thought: ask your md to switch to xarelto or pradaxa...
