Scarlet fever: The peeling skin is an inflammatory response that has already been initiated.  The skin peeling will continue, but the symptoms of pain and itching may be relieved with topical moisturizers.  The body's ability to fight any infection can be aided by taking vit c 500mg three times per day for 1 week.

Not the cause...: Although after having Scarlet Fever you can get peeling (desquamation) of the skin on the hands/feet, this occurs towards the end of the acute illness. Years later, the cause is likely dry skin or another completely unrelated issue. The strep infection from years ago is not to blame.

Hand foot and mouth?: It's very uncommon for adults, common for kids.  In the last few weeks i've seen several adults with hand, foot, and mouth disease. It's an uncomfortable but not dangerous viral illness, improves within a few days, but if your symptoms, worsen, change or fail to improve you should be seen.

Unusual: Almost always has sore throat as part of the illness, but could imagine circumstances under which this might not happen.

he is now complaining that his joints are sore. could this be related ?

Maybe/maybe not: Scarlet fever is just an old term for strep A infection with a red rash. If untreated with antibiotics within the first week to 10 days there is a 1/200 risk of rheumatic fever. Six weeks out would be a reasonable point for it to show up, but the joint pain is not specific to RF.  An exam and testing would sort this out.

Likely unrelated: Scarlet fever is just a strep A infection, usually throat, that also generates a red sunburn like rash. Chickenpox is usually experienced in childhood (95%)yielding permanent immunity. Its incubation until breakout is 10-21 days. You didn't say if you have a sore throat or the date of exposure from chickenpox. Neither produces facial lumps.

Lumps: Rash of Chicken Pox will start on face and chest commonly. However at 35 you have likely been exposed to Chickenpox. Rash could be impetigo or something related to strep.

Maybe: Elevated aso levels indicate a past strep infection....Just not exactly when. It is important to have her evaluated to see if it is something acute or if it could be related to strep.In  the cases I have seen of rheumatic problems after strep the patients did not remember having a strep infection. If her scarlet fever was treated then this may not be related.

See your doctor: Rashes are hard to diagnose online sometimes so if you do think it looked like Scarlet fever then you need to see your doctor. Scarlet fever is caused by the strep bacteria and should be treated to prevent complications. If this is a virus then the strep test will be negative and fluids, rest and liquids are the treatment.
