Accepted Answer

Yes possible: Any injection can cause a local swelling or irritation in the area of injection.  This should resolve in a few days at the most.  If still of concern, seek advice from your doctor.

Yes: As far as shingles, no. You are young and the likelihood of developing post shingles pain is lower (absent any coexisting medical issues) . The main concern is why did you develop shingles which tends to occur epwhen your immune system is taxed or is weak. The swollen axillary gland needs to be evaluated and possibly biopsied. Rare: Shingles without a rash is rare. Could the facial swelling be an allergic reaction or be due to a tooth abscess? Have your md check you.

If there was a: Secondary skin infection of blisters - that could occur.

Oral medications: Oral medications like Famvir or Valtrex (valacyclovir) to try to shut down the virus are the best treatments.  As for the swelling of the rash, that is helped by the oral medications.

It will get better: Shingles will heal on its own with/out treatment. Early treatment can result in faster healing/less swelling. 2-3 wks is the typical course of shingle attack without early treatment. Some may have persistent/prolonged postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain), but swelling will pretty much always resolve completely. Sleep in recliner may lessen swelling a bit. Consult doc for treatment. Good luck.

Need Imaging Study: You may need to rule out any process occurring at the spinal level, such as a herniated disc. These are less clear to diagnose if they are at the thoracic level. An MRI of the thoracic and lumbar spine might be useful if discussed and approved by you family physician.

Skin Infection: This very well may be a rare but possible complication of a shot.  It could be a skin infection. I would page your doctor on call to discuss.

: Your problems in the axillary area may or may not be related to the vaccine.  It is highly unlikely at this point that you can independently manage this.  Recommend you visit your regular physician ASAP, and get this examined and evaluated which can lead to therapeutic intervention.
