Your : Your dentist can remove the old sealant by using air abrasion or a fine diamond bur. There are times when a sealant can be applied over the existing sealant. I will visually inspect every sealant at each recall examination and touch up as necessary.

Dental Sealants: Dental sealants are placed to help prevent cavities from forming in the pits and fissures of posterior (back) teeth. It can also be applied to adult teeth. Anterior (front) teeth do not have pits and fissures that put the teeth at risk for cavities (except for the linguals of the lateral maxillary incisors).

Very Easy: Your dentist will bathe the area to be sealed with phosphoric acid, and after washing it off, s/he will flow a sealant into the pits and fissures, and then cure the sealant with a very bright light. Totally painless.

Uncommon: Dental sealants are usually placed on posterior teeth or those teeth with pits and fissures.  Anterior teeth usually do not have pits and fissures and thus would not retain sealants well.

Yes and no: Sealants can only be used on the grooves of the back teeth. That being said, the sealants will last a long time, probably not your whole life. However, they can be re-applied if they come off.  There are no sealants for the front teeth.

can children get sealants before all of their baby teeth come in? i would like get sealants for both of our kids, but neither of them have all of their baby teeth yet. is there any point in getting them yet?

Sealants : Sealants are usually placed on permanent teeth, not on baby teeth. And they are placed on the posterior (back) teeth, not the front teeth.

The six year molars are the first permanent teeth that will come in that we usually put sealants on. If you want your dentist to place the sealants on your children's primary teeth, i'm sure you can speak to him/her and they will give you their opinion. There is no harm in doing it, just the expense.

Since : Since dental sealents fill the groves of the posterior teeth they can affect his bite and make his teeth feel uncomfortable. Typically, with normal chewing the extra sealent material can wear away and just leave the groves sealed. Avoid foods that are too sticky with sealents. The normal time to adjust is 7-10 days. However, if he is uncomfortable and will not eat, I am sure that your  dentist who placed them will adjust his bite and smooth them down to make them feel more normal. Just call and get him in as soon as possible. Good luck.
