Possibly: This needs a systematic approach to diagnosis and may require some invasive procedures, depending upon what non-invasive studies reveal. It may take several visits to the doctor to have this all worked out. Could be very benign, but cancer must be excluded so that aggressive treatment can be started if it is present.

No: Benign lung nodules are present on ct scan in a large minority of the population, perhaps even more than 50% in some areas, and depending upon how you define "nodules".  They do not impair your lung function.

Yes and No: Asbestos can cause scarring of the lungs(Plaques and fibrosis). In that regard a lung nodule could develop , either due to scar or due to lung Cancer. Most patients with lung nodules do not have asbestosis as the cause. So it would be low on my list of causes for a lung nodule..

Growth: If a lung nodule thickens, that means it is growing. Whether this is cancer, infection or anything else, you need to find out.

Inflamation, etc: Benign nodules are often the result of abnormal tissue, inflammation and/or scar. This can result from inhaling something or having an infection.

Yes: Fungal lung infections commonly will result in nodular lesions to a greater or lesser extent. These will frequently remain in the lungs after an infection and cause concern for cancer until they develop calcifications which are rarely seen with cancerous nodules in the lung. Ct of the lungs is very sensitive for calcification and is frequently used for evaluation of pulmonary nodules.

Unlikely: Lung nodules tend to be the result of either infectious processes or tumors (benign or malignant).  Asbestos exposure usually results in calcificiation along the lining of the lungs (called pleural plaques) or scarring of the lungs (called asbestosis).
