re stopping pradaxa:  how many days in advance my scheduled x-stop spacer implant back surgery should i stop taking this blood thinner?
i take a 150mg capsule twice a day.  i started this prescription on 11/17/2012 and prior to that i took 7.5mg coumadin

Consult your doc: This question should have been addressed by your surgeon in consultation with the doctor who put you on it. The proper answer also needs to take into account why you are on the pradaxa. You may need to take Heparin injections between the time you stop the Pradaxa and the surgery.

it's been a year since my cataract surgery and i've got a blood shot eye. is it anything to worry about?

Yes: you should be fully recovered from your surgery.  you need to see your ophthalmologist to see if there is a chronic condition causing your red eye.  it may be a simple problem or more serious. it may or may not be related to the cat surgery.

is it a requirement that blood pressure reading be taken prior to cataract surgery? take meds but have white coat issue. advice?

Preoperative  bp: It is important to measure your blood pressure preoperatively and if it's very high, the surgeon may not   perform the cataract surgery. To avoid this happening ask your primary care physician to outline a regimen of antihypertensive medication, including medication taken with a small amount of water on the morning of surgery. If your anxiety is a major problem, a tranquilizer can be prescribed to

can an ophthalmologist, in preparing to do cataract surgery on an adult, notice the patient has high blood pressure when examining only the inside of the eye?

HBP and the eye: Yes there are specific finding that strongly suggest the patient has high blood pressure. But one must measure the BP to confirm. Every Dr was taught how to do this in medical school and should do it in every patient with high blood pressure.  Specific finding can predict the patient will be dead from severe high blood pressure in a year if not treated.

i had posterior uveitis then cataract surgery last year. recently i was diagnosed with grave's disease. is all of this somehow related?

It can be but low: Uveitis can be associated with Thyroid disease but it is ususlly a very low percent around 2%. It is been found mainly in poorly controlled hyper thyroidism. You could be check to see if you have any other autoimmune phenomena that might explain your case. Your physician should be able to help you with this.

very good morning doctors. my sixty year-old friend went to the ophthalmologist and was told he has ebmd. could you please explain this condition? it was found coincidentally to his having cataract surgery. could the surgery possibly worsen the ebmd?

: I am assuming that you mean ABMD (anterior basement membrane disease) which is a disease that causes loose corneal epithelium leaving the patient prone to corneal abrasions.  The surgeon will be careful not to cause an abrasion during cataract surgery.  Tell your friend to keep his eyes lubricated.

33 yrs old. is it normal to experience iritis twice after 2 months post cataract surgery. any precaution required to work condition travelling?

Accepted Answer

Red eye post surgery: Iritis/uveitis after cataract surgery is not uncommon. If no surgical complication and implant in proper place ('in bag') it is due to rebound inflammation as steroids decreased. See eyemd to be sure haptics &amp; IOL in proper place. Have steroids on hand during travel. Though rare: If persists after surgery, may need a blood work up for uveitis.

Coumadin (warfarin): no direct risk from magnetic closure on jewelry

i take coumadin (warfarin) and my gums are bleeding a little could this be caused by the blood thinner and what should i do?

Accepted Answer

Possible: Much gum bleeding is poor periodontal attention, flossing, brushing, dental hygiene etc may solve this.
If coumadin/warfarin is raising inr out of bound desired, some spontaneous or traumatic bleeding can occur.
Check inr and talk to controlling md or clinic.

does coumadin (warfarin) make you extremely fatigued?  is there a medication that is a blood thinner but you don't need an inr check?

Accepted Answer

Rivaroxaban.: Coumadin (warfarin) does not make you extremely fatigued unless you're anemic from occult bleeding because of a supratherapeutic (i.e., really high) inr. Make sure you stay on top of your inr and, if you're feeling really fatigued, to have your hemoglobin/hematocrit (which is your blood count) checked. Rivaroxaban is a blood thinner that doesn't require monitoring. Discuss with your pcp.
