i am on birth control and took azo maximum strength for uti pain. the only active ingredient is phenazopyridine hydrochloride. will this interfere with birth control?

: No.  Just be aware Azo is a “pain pill” for the bladder, not an antibiotic.  You may feel better but its possible the bladder infection is continuing.  At your age, you should get a test for urinary infection (Many drug stores sell test strips to determine if the infection is ongoing)

i've just been released from the er. diagnosis severe uti. i was given 2 tablets of pyridium (phenazopyridine). how long until i get some relief?

Depend...: Pyridium (phenazopyridine) is just a topical soothing agent, not an antibiotics, for the lining of bladder and urethra, which should exert its effectiveness right away but at unpredictable variable degree depending on the severity of infection and inflammation as well as personal tolerance. So, it is not for UTI, but as complementary agent to ease its related symptoms.

UTI: If you have started cipro (ciprofloxacin) then continue and complete the course. Once on cipro (ciprofloxacin) yield of cultures is low. Most uncomplicated UTI in young women don't need cipro (ciprofloxacin) and other narrow spectrum abx may be a better choice assuming no drug allergies. And cultures may not needed as long as uncomplicated with symptoms and a Positive UA

Rash likely allergic: You do not say how you diagnose UTI. Bladder and urinary discomfort come from any inflammation of the urinary tract both infective and non-infective  causes. You should be evaluated by a urologist if you are having frequent urinary tract discomfort. As to the rash, it can also be allergic or infective in origin and should be seen by your primary MD and he may want to refer you to a dermatologist.

No: This medication is used to relieve symptoms caused by irritation of the urinary tract such as pain, burning, and the feeling of needing to urinate urgently or frequently. This drug does not treat the cause of the urinary irritation. Need to see physician for proper examination , testing and treatment of urinary tract infection.

Azo/Uristat 4 sympts: Azo & uristat (phenazopyridine) contain Phenazopyridine & relieve symptoms of urinary tract burning, pain & discomfort. Cranberry juice, gelcaps & tablets are a preventative against future utis by interfering with bacterial adherence to urinary tract lining (bladder & urethra). You need antibiotics to actually treat & cure a uti.

i have a uti.  i have a doctors appt. in the morning.  i have taken 2 pyridium (phenazopyridine) but the pain is still really bad.  what can i take to help?

Clinic: If the pain is severe, it may not be simply a UTI but rather a kidney stone. If the Pyridium (phenazopyridine) is not working, try ibuprofen. If that still doesn't help and it can't wait until the morning when you see your doctor, you may want to go to an urgent care or walk-in clinic in your area for evaluation and possible narcotic pain medication.

Stop meds: Then wait to see if your symptoms return. Suggest that you get a ua and a culture to see if it really is a UTI and then they can select the correct medication. Do not take that med again and make sure other doctors know what type of reaction you had. It is possible you had enough medications to clear it.

No it does not: Uristat (phenazopyridine) relieves bladder and urethral symptoms of burning &/or pain. Does nothing to clear up a uti. You need antibiotics to kill the bacteria which cause utis. Best to consult your dr. Or nurse practioner.
