Autoimmune hepatitis: Having no other information and though other possibilities exist, please discuss this one with your doctor also. Autoimmune hepatitis is caused by the same process which causes addison's disease and thyroiditis in this case. It has nothing to do with infection or alcoholism.  Bilirubin may or may not be elevated.

i have hypothyroid. i have a skin rash on my hand and the top of my leg. my liver enzymes were high. could it be lupus?

Need more: A diagnosis of lupus requires way more testing than this.  This would be an unusual location for a lupus skin rash.

my liver enzymes have fluctuated between normal and mildly elevated over the past 2 yrs.  the alt, ggtp, alkaline phos, bili, includiing the mcv.  i also have hypothyroid disease and take armour thyroid.  should i be concerned?

Abnormal LFT: You need to have further evaluation, abnormal lft may be from hepatitis c , fatty liver, autoimmune disease etc...

No: Look for a different cause. It would be shame to miss hemochromatosis, Wilson's, viral or immune hepatitis, or one of the other bad ones because somebody blamed it on chewing tobacco.

on methotrexate /weekly injections x 3months.in last week, waking up nightly very nauseated. could increased liver enzymes cause nausea?

See below: The nausea and the elevated liver enzymes are probably due to the methotrexate.  Your rheumatologist should know about your symptoms.

Yes: The syrup is a proprietary blend of a Multi-Vit + Cyproheptadine. Cyproheptadine is a Histamine H1 Antagonist. Commonly used for  Perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis and other allergic symptoms.

There is a report of Hepatic: Cholestasis, hepatic failure, hepatitis, jaundice. Though the frequency of these adverse events is not defined. Consult your GP for further evaluation and workup.

can doxycycline 200mg increase liver enzymes or cause them to be high(ast&alt) or is it unlikely?

Yes: Yes, Doxycycline can indeed raise live enzymes, as can many safe drugs.  The question really is, how much are they elevated and how quickly do the come down after stopping it.  It would also be nice to know what your liver enzymes were prior to being on the doxy, if the baseline is available.

can cymbalta, famotodine, benedryl, hydroxizine or magnesium increase liver enzymes. my alt was 60 in march with a virus and started these meds in june and now my alt is 100 and ast is 60. could the medications cause the increase?

: Yes, medication can cause hepatitis. However, we could not rule out progressive hepatitis from the initial viral infection, especially you are infected with hepatitis B or C. So in this case, steps need to be carried out for defining the etiology. I hope you have been followed by a gastroenterologist or a hepatologist.

unexplained elevated liver enzymes (alt. ast, ggt) exhausted every possible cause. doctor says i must take statin. started one month ago. enzymes increases slightly. alt now at 87. baseline was 70. should statin be stopped ? gi says no and cardio -no?

: I consider the cited ALT numbers to be within the normal variation of lab studies on the same person taken days or weeks apart. They are low enough that I would not consider them any evidence of liver irritation/injury. Jump the levels in to the several hundred range and I would take note.

Usually OK: When we talk about liver enzymes, we are usually referring to transaminases (sgot/sgpt, ast/alt). The lower limit of normal is either zero or close to zero. Therefore having a low value of one of these is not an issue. Albumin and protein can be low in malnutrition or protein-losing kidney disease. And severe malnutrition will cause everything to be very low across the board.
