i am in hospital w/a "gram+ bacillus" sepsis..6/8 blood culture bottles are +. caused by a dirty cut then severe cellulitis. i have heart vegetation from it they say. also on cellcept. can you educate me on whats the significance of heart vegetation?

Endocarditis. : What you describe is endocarditis. The vegetations harbor the bacteria that are identified when blood cultures are obtained.  Sepsis, heart failure as well as "septic emboli" are potential complications   6 weeks of IV antibiotics followed by repeat blood cultures and follow up echocardiogram to insure treatment was adequate.

: You keep asking much the same question. Maybe a problem is the term "shaving stick", which usually means a product to stop bleeding of shaving nicks. But you also mention sharp instrument, maybe a razor? There could be slight risk, if used immediately after an HIV infected person, and if visible wet blood were on the blade. Otherwise no risk, and virus survival duration doesn't matter.

Doesn't matter: It is generally believed that the virus dies, or cannot be transmitted, once blood dries. However, this really doesn't matter. Nobody ever is infected by contacting blood in the environment. If you see wet blood, avoid touching it. Otherwise this isn't something to be worried about. Have only safe sex and don't share drug injection equipment and you'll never be at risk for HIV.

Not very long: People often ask this question because of concerns if they pick up or prick themselves on a dirty needle. HIV does not survive well outside the body. Once the liquid (blood, semen, vaginal fluid, etc.) it is in has dried, the virus is dead and not transmissible. So an old dirty needle, if dry, cannot transmit HIV. Other viruses such as hep b and hep c are much hardier and can survive longer.
