Not very long: People often ask this question because of concerns if they pick up or prick themselves on a dirty needle. HIV does not survive well outside the body. Once the liquid (blood, semen, vaginal fluid, etc.) it is in has dried, the virus is dead and not transmissible. So an old dirty needle, if dry, cannot transmit HIV. Other viruses such as hep b and hep c are much hardier and can survive longer.
