Often improved by stooling, ibs is defined by changes in perception of gut distension, motility, sensation. Diet &amp;emotional stress may contribute. Ibs is a diagnosis of exclusion--first rule out inflammation, ischemia, infection.

Constipation: but how old is your son? Several causes for constipation at different ages, thyroid gland problems can be one cause, psychological problems too, fear, anxiety, your doctor can help, probably glycerin suppository / enema would help, up to doctor judgement

Sometimes your: colon and intestine secrete some mucous. If this is too much this is not a desired condition. But mucousy stools are usually associated more with diarrhea then constipation.  Are you getting enough fiber in your diet? Does anybody else in your family have colon problems? Have you taken a lot of antibiotics? These are some of the questions a doctor would ask to evaluate this for you.

Hard to know: Constipation can be a brief occasional event or a years long battle. It is influenced by natural bowel rhythm, diet, the kids stooling pattern as well as other issues. Without a review of all factors and exam it is hard to plan a treatment. The most common reason for treatment failure is failing to treat long enough. He may need an enema &amp; bowel washout. Discuss this with his doc.

Yes water: Fibers worst nothing without water and adequate hydration drink a lot of water and juices like prune juice eat dry fruits and follow it with a plenty of water and Gatorade

Not the best: Pedialyte and water are used more for hydration issues in a child.  You need to speak with your Pediatrician regarding treatments for a 7 week old, as "too much" water should not be given either. Best wishes.
