Yes, but...: Doxycycline can be used to treat strep throat infections (caused by strep bacteria), but other antibiotics are better choices, such as penicillin, amoxicillin, azithromycin, cephalexin, etc... Sore throats that are caused by viruses, stomach acid reflux, or allergies, benefit from other treatments instead of antibacterial antibiotics. Viral sore throats usually do not have an antiviral treatment.

: It is acceptable to open the capsule and to take the medication that way. Avoid missed doses.

Cold?: after taking the antibiotic if you are still having a sore throat you need to see your doctor.  Colds usually last only a few days and do not need antibiotics.  If you get a lot of colds and other infections your doctor can run blood work to check your immune system.  Feel better!

Only if the throat..: If the throat has an infection caused by germs that can be killed by doxycycline, then the medication can help. That's a big "if", because many sore throats are caused by viruses (and thus are not affected by doxycycline). Also, the doxycycline for some rashes may be at a dose that is not right for treating bacterial throat infections.

There : There are two possibilities here: #1.-you likely did not have a strep infection, but a viral pharyngitis (throat infection) and you are feeling better because time has passed, not from the antibiotics, a mere coincidence. With viral pharyngitis you can develop a viral exanthem (rash) towards the end of the infectious process. This is self limiting.
#2.- you have strep that is resistant to doxycline and know you have developed scarlet fever (rash)
if this is the case you will need a change of medication.
I recommend you find a low or no cost clinic in your area and schedule a visit. Lastly, remember it is never wise to self treat with antibiotics.

: likely viral. The combination of med you are using would kill strep. At least 1/2 of sore throats are viral. At some point the meds may permit yeast to overgrow in that location causing thrush. An exam could sort this out.

Sore throat: Sore throat usually gets better by itself. The purpose of antibiotic is to decrease the number of days with sore throat only if proven to be bacterial by  rapid strep test or culture. It might  take up to 3 days for the antibiotic to show its effect. Luke warm saline water gargle ( pinch of salt in a glass of warter) is a good home remedy. Next pain is most likely from lymph node enlargement.

Need throat culture: Although the symptoms may still be due to a viral infection, it is time for you to obtain a throat culture to specifically determine if you have a bacterial infection of the throat and obtain specific antibiotic treatment.

See pcp, & dentist: Do you have a cold? Sinus infection or post nasal dripping? Any gum pain or tooth pain? It could be an infection in throat, or it could be teeth related.  See your doctor first.  If he can't help, then see your dentist.

Viral infection: 90 % of cases its a viral infection, especially in this flu season. It could be also a steptococcal pharyngitis if you have fever or white patches on the tonsils. Infectious mononucleosis is a another viral inf. Which is a possibility. If the symptoms stay for 5-7 days and resolve it is most likely a viral inf and don't be hesitant in taking an antibiotic before that. Talk to your family doctor
