what is the  reason behind snoring?

Many answers: Classically the snoring sound comes from the soft palate and uvula.  However, when I have performed sleep endoscopy on my patients (patients are asleep as i watch their airway with a fiberoptic scope), I have seen the tongue, lateral walls, and even the epiglottis vibrate to contribute to the snoring.  Improving nasal airflow is a good 1st step in addressing snoring.

Collapsing throat: During sleep, the muscles in the neck relax and coalesce together, causing narrowing and sometimes blockage of the throat. Due to the narrower airway, snoring occurs. It usually is a manifestation of sleep apnea. Treatment is with a CPAP machine.

Airway vibrations: Snoring is caused by vibrations of the upper airway tissues in the back of the nose and throat. Simple snoring occurs in absence of sleep apnea. Screening for sleep apnea is important. Enlarged adenoid/tonsils and septal deviation are other causes. Treating sleep apnea can improve snoring. Alcohol and sedative medications can worsen. Treatment includes nasal steroids, dental appliances and surgery

Snoring: Snoring is just the sound of turbulent airflow passing through a slightly collapsed or crowded oropharynx or back of the throat.  It is just a sound but it is a sound that makes us suspicious for potential underlying sleep apnea.  Keep in mind that 65-75% of individuals that do snore have some level of underlying osa.  Also, mild snoring can arise from chronic nasal congestion as well.

Cause of Snoring: Snoring means your airway blocks partially during inspiration when sleeping. The blockage can occur in the nose, the soft palate, the tonsils, the tongue base, and the folds over the voice box. Any blockage will create snoring. Go see an ENT for a complete exam of your airway, if snoring is bothering you or someone you sleep with.

Yes: Common snoring is annoying but not usually dangerous. However loud snoring can be a sign of a more serious condition called obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Osas can result in high blood pressure and heart rhythm abnormalities.  Obesity can be a co-morbidity and loosing weight may be helpful.  Symptoms include day time tiredness and awakening frequently during the night often with a gasp for air.

Try these approaches: Sometimes snoring is due to partial obstruction of the airway, which may be due to uvula, and an otolaryngologist can help.  Sleep apnea does associate with snoring and this should be evaluated.  A c-pap unit or a dental splint may create control.  Some dentists specialize in sleep disorders.

Multifactorial: There are multiple causes of depression such as : having a positive family history , brain chemistry changes, medical illnesses (i.E thyroid disease, perimenopause), side effects from medications, major life stressors, substance use/abuse and history of abuse/trauma.
