Probably not, but...: First, make sure that ua was done with carefully collected midstream urine specimen, especially for sexually active females. As a result, some or few wbcs, bacteria, or yeasts alone should not assume to have kidney infection without assessing overall clinical, especially systemic sx, pictures and imaging evidence. It has been a relative common practice among pcp/er with such assumption.

No: A urine culture only tells you if there is bacteria in the urine. If there is, it could be confined to just the bladder and not at all affecting the kidneys. However, a positive culture does not exclude kidney involvement either. Doc will be looking at whether there is protein in urine and blood work of BUN and creatinine to see if kidneys involved.

Yes.: If a bacteria is the cause of a kidney abcess and cannot be treated adequately by antibiotics, then surgical debridement will be necessary.

There is a rare congenital deficiency of this enzyme but deficiency usually due to severe chronic kidney disease/failure.

Prevent meningitis: Your doc has put you on what&#x27;s called &#x27;chemoprophylaxis&#x27; -which is using medication to prevent infection after a possible exposure. I trust ur doc weighed the benefits vs. very small risks of putting you on therapy. Indeed, Cipro (ciprofloxacin) is a very good medicine for this -and with having only one kidney it should be OK. You should take a 1x dose. That lessens the chance for side-effects further.

Pyelonephritis: This can occur by extension of infection from another site through the bloodstream, from an adjacent area of infection, or by ascending infection from lower urinary tract infection. Strep is an unusual cause of pyelonephritis, and as mentioned previously it would help to know which species of strep you have. Prevention may depend upon this knowledge.

Yes: Urine tests, like all diagnostic tests, are not perfect.  Additionally, if you are taking antibiotics when you submit the specimen, the sample may appear normal despite an ongoing infection.  Lastly, if your infected kidney is completely obstructed (i.e. By a stone), the urine tests may look negative.

See below: Keflex is listed as b category in preganancy ie no animal data showing toxicity, however no controlled studies in humans, medications are taken during pregnancy with the understanding that the benefits outweigh risks. If the medical condition itself can cause harm, then the treatment risks need to be weighed.Your doctor can advise you further and also give you lenght of therapy.
