what is the best antidepressant to take if you are taking thyroid medication?

All r good: We used to add a low dose of thyroid med to some treatment resistant depressed patients--the combination is no problem.

what can a 74 year old woman, in great physical shape, take for anxiety but not antidepressants (tried most all) which only make the anxiety worse? taking no rx but armour thyroid, 60mg a day. anxiety recently from losing long term husband. thank you?

See answer: Antidepressants don't affect thyroid function. Safe to take thyroid medication together with antidepressants as prescribed.  Some symptoms of depression and thyroid disorder may overlap. However, the cause may be one or the other. Lengthy medical training provides that expertise. Take care.

: Your relatively high heart rate but still in normal range which could be a side effect of SNRI antidepressant. Continue to exercise and keep your body mass in range, you should be fine, nothing specific for a poor prognosis.

Maybe: There are some forms of thyroid disorders that are inherited, like graves disease and hashimoto's (chronic autoimmune thyroiditis).  There are different forms of thyroid dysfunction like over active and under active thyroid.  They have different symptoms like fast heart rate for overactive (hyperthyroid).  Thyroid cancer can also be hereditary.  If you have concerns for your risk, see your doctor.

Yes: These are symptoms consistent with hypothyroidism although other non-thyroid conditions can also cause the same things. Get a blood draw to tease it out.

Anxiety and thyroid: Hyperthyroidism can cause anxiety and heart palpitations.  Be aware the if you have an over active thyroid, symptoms of a panic attack may represent a heart arrhythmia.

Possibly: Both hypo and hyperthyroidism can cause erectile dysfunction (impotence). The condition of low thyroid levels (hypothyroidism) is more likely to do so. Furthermore, untreated hypothyroidism can lead to high prolactin levels, that may additionally contribute to sexual dysfunction.
